HISTORY

Where teachers began by learning  ...

Year 2007. Jamnagar was about to get its first TGES school—Sarojben Memorial International School (SMIS). The first of its kind in the city.

The school began without any students, only teachers! Because, first the teachers needed to learn. Four teachers underwent a nine-month long training to learn how to Teach for Understanding (TFU), the methodology pioneered by Howard Gardner of Harvard University. The trainer was Kiran Sethi, the well-known educationist of The Riverside School.  It was interesting and demanding and involved several trips to Ahmedabad.

In February 2008, our first students joined SMIS. It was a sort of fun trial run! Children were joined the same class they were studying in in the previous school and did not pay any fees for the first three months!

SMIS started formally from June 3, 2008. There were 45 children in all—in Playhouse, Pre-K and K1.

We soon outgrew the bungalow we started in. We continue to grow in our new premises. We now have Pre-K to G10. And our teachers continue to be learners, as enthusiastic as our growing number of students.

… and continue teaching to learn
