Corona Virus/ COVID-19 awareness and SMIS's prevention efforts
Circular 1 :
Dear parents, students and staff,
COVID-19: Coronavirus
We are formulating a comprehensive response to what is now officially a global pandemic. Our objective will be to mitigate the health and academic impact of the virus on our school and local community. While there is no reason for panic as yet, the threat is very real. And a question of when the virus will be amongst us, not if.
The most effective counter-measures have primarily dealt with minimising the spread of the virus, since there is no vaccine or cure. Our efforts will be focused in this direction. We will send you internet links, later tonight, to further raise awareness of the virus, its spread and what are effective responses. And also how and why some countries were more successful than others in reducing the impact of the virus on their citizens.
Here are some proactive responses we are taking:
We are beginning with what is know as social-distancing. Essentially it means to try and prevent a gathering of large groups of people that might aid the transmission of the virus.
Immediately, all functions that involve large gatherings are being postponed. This includes a Prize-Giving function that was to be held tonight at SNK and another function at Savani tomorrow.
Morning assemblies will now be limited to a single unit or a class. Any gathering in school, in a self-contained room, hall or area, maybe a maximum of 120 students approximately.
All outstation trips and local field trips are on hold for now. No non-essential travel.
Examinations will continue to be held as scheduled.
We must all practise self-responsibility to the community. Please follow common sense self-isolation guidelines in case of sickness. This applies to all of us.
PLEASE NOTE
All campuses will be Closed Campuses during the time students are in school. No visitors except by appointment. A visitor means anyone who is not a staff member or student who has a reason to be on that campus. GATES WILL BE CLOSED. For entry, a visitor must show a message on their phone authorising entry. Parents visiting school during school hours for official purposes will be facilitated entry as needed. More details to follow.
Depending on the challenges that we might face, and the lessons learned from other countries like China, Singapore and Taiwan, there are likely to be many changes to everyday life in the next few weeks. Please do not be surprised if extreme measures such as schools being closed, and learning happening online, come to pass. This has already happened in China and is happening, even as you read this, in America.
Over the next few days, we will regularly post information, links, guidelines and policies as we navigate through these very difficult times.
Thank you for your support and understanding. And remember, forewarned is forearmed.
Yours sincerely,
Kiran Bhalodia
